What a rock chip actually is.
A stone off the 15 or the 805 hits the outer layer of your laminated windshield and leaves a star, a bullseye or a small combination of the two. The inner layer is fine, which is why the chip can be filled rather than the glass replaced. Left alone, temperature swings work on the break until it runs. Filled the same week, it stops.
How the repair works.
The technician cleans the impact point, seals a bridge over it and pulls a vacuum to draw the air out of the break. Resin goes in under pressure, fills every leg of the star, and is cured with UV light in minutes. The glass regains its strength, the chip mostly disappears, and the factory seal is never touched.
